High-resolution color scanner enables 3D scanning in 0.3 seconds for applications including AR/VR/gaming, retail and biometrics

Fuel3D, a leading 3D capture and imaging innovator, today announced the details of a new 360-degree scanner. The Fuel3D 360 Scanner is a high-speed imaging and measurement system, designed for capturing highly detailed 360-degree 3D data.

In just 0.3 seconds, the Fuel3D 360 Scanner captures high-resolution 3D data (accurate to 0.2mm). The scanner captures both shape and color data of mid-sized objects – around the size of a human head and shoulders. The easily transportable scanning rig can be set-up and calibrated in under an hour, making it ideal for on-location scanning and pop-up retail opportunities.

To support application development, an SDK will enable users to integrate the Fuel3D 360 Scanner into their own applications.

Expected applications for the Fuel3D 360 Scanner include:

  • Movie actor and gaming CGI

Fuel3D, a leading 3D capture and imaging innovator, today announced the details of a new compact 3D scanner. The Fuel3D Desktop Scanner is a high-speed imaging and measurement system, designed for capturing extremely high-resolution 3D data.

In just 0.14 seconds, the Fuel3D Desktop Scanner captures high-resolution 3D data (accurate to 0.045mm). The scanner captures both shape and color data of smaller objects – around the size of a human ear.

To support application development, an SDK will enable users to integrate the Fuel3D Desktop Scanner into their own applications.

New Sfered scanner trialed with retail opticians; 3D printed eyewear manufacturer monoqool first to integrate with virtual fitting system

Fuel3D, a leading 3D capture and imaging innovator, and eyewear technology developer Sfered, today announced a new mirror-based 3D scanning system to support the deployment and fitting of custom eyewear. The system is being demonstrated this week in collaboration with 3D printed eyewear firm, monoqool, at SILMO, the world’s biggest eyewear tradeshow.

Combining the image capture capabilities of Fuel3D’s advanced 3D scanning platform with Sfered’s custom eyewear systems, this is the first 3D scanner for the eyewear sector to be incorporated into a mirror. The 180-degree scanner is being tested in select optical retail locations in Europe over the summer period, with full retail availability of the system expected by the end of 2016.

The incorporation of the scanner into a mirror places the technology ahead of other emerging facial capture systems.

“When people look into a mirror, they relax, straighten up and focus much more naturally than if they are looking into a camera, which means that the scanner collects more accurate data for custom eyewear fitting,” said Peter Tutuarima, CEO, Sfered. “We have worked closely with the team at Fuel3D to bring this new scanning system to market and we are looking forward to demonstrating the benefits that next-generation facial scanning can bring to the custom fit process.”

Key product elements include:

  • Highly accurate facial scanning that allows opticians to collect all metrics required for fitting of eyewear and production of custom fit eyewear in a single scan.
  • High speed 3D capture that collects facial data in 0.1 seconds, allowing data capture of: pupillary distance; nose bridge width; facial width; and distance to ear (for glasses’ arm length data)
  • Access to a wide range of frame data held in Sfered’s frames database, allowing opticians to virtually fit frames to customers for an enhanced customer experience.
  • An open platform that allows frame manufacturers like monoqool to upload their catalogs for virtual fitting of frames.

Denmark’s monoqool is an innovator in eyewear design, pioneering 3D laser printed polyamid frames that are completely customized to the wearer. The company is the first to integrate its offering into the new scanning system.

New 3D scanning feature developed with FittingBox enhances eyewear virtual try-on solution

Fuel3D, a leading 3D capture and imaging innovator, and FittingBox, the world leader in virtual try-on solutions for eyewear, today announced a new 3D scanning collaboration for in-store try-on systems.

FittingBox currently offers an in-store virtual try-on product called OWIZ Mirror, which combines a digital camera and screen to allow optometrists and opticians to provide an augmented reality try-on solution in their retail locations. The OWIZ system currently uses a combination of 2D imaging and software to replicate a “3D” experience.

Fuel3D has developed a 3D scanning enhancement for the OWIZ system, which allows optometrists and opticians to offer customers a unique in-store experience. Customers can rapidly change between frame styles and view themselves in new frames in real time; the system tracks head movements to provide customers with a truly augmented reality of how they’ll look via dynamic on-screen video.

Potential applications include using the tools to capture various measurements of the human form, such as the dimensions of the face, hands or feet.

Measurement tools include:

  • Contour length: Measure the contoured distance between two points over the surface of the image.
  • Multi-segment length: Measure the straight line length comprised of any number of line segments.
  • Area: Measure the 3D area defined by a closed set of points on the surface of the image.

3D PDF export
With Fuel3D Studio’s new 3D PDF capability, users can save their 3D models as a 3D PDF file and easily email them to colleagues.

A 3D PDF is a PDF file that combines dynamic, rich 3D data with metadata, text, images, video and forms in a PDF document. 3D PDF files are compact, secure and easy to share, and are completely interactive.

This new format is transforming how companies communicate engineering data today – previously, 3D scans would have to be exported into a 3D file format, and then uploaded to a 3D platform before sharing the URL, taking several minutes. With 3D PDF the 3D file can be shared in seconds via email in a file format that even novice users are accustomed to.

Offline processing
All Fuel3D Studio users can currently access enhanced processing of their scans via Fuel3D’s cloud-based processing option. With this new update, Fuel3D Studio Professional users will also have the opportunity to access offline processing of their scans by using Fuel3D’s latest algorithms on a local computer.

Mac compatibility
